You might be thinking, Mel Brooks? on Broadway? Isn't he like 100 years old? Well that's not far off, Mel Brooks who is currently 93, did a few nights of jokes at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater.
The short explanation here, is the theater doesn't have a regular show performing, s they're renting out space to anyone who wants to say they were on broadway.
This was less of a performance and more of an interview. The "show" opened with a bunch of clips throughout Mel Brooks' career ranging from Blazing Saddles to SpaceMel Brooks and his interviewer walked out on stage to two large comfy armchairs.
After a few minutes of jokes, Mel Brooks asked the audience for permission to sit, as he's 93 years old. The bulk of the show was Mel Brooks and the other man having a conversation about his life and career.
Mel Brooks would go on tangents about what it was like working with Gene Wilder, Sid Caesar, and Madeline Kahn. Occasionally he'd show clips of scenes with them or tell stories behind their roles.
Mel Brooks is as witty as ever. When an audience member shouted "I love you," he quickly responded "You have terrible taste." Later in the show there was a QnA and an audience member asks "Do you wear boxers or briefs?" His response, "depends!"
While this wasn't a flashy performance this was a very cool event to witness. I've personally seen most of Mel Brooks filmography and I loved hearing stories behind some of his classics.
It was also cool to see Mel Brooks while he's still around. At 93, he's a living legend, and I don't know how many more years we'll have to enjoy him.
